Abstract

Autism spectrum disorders are a group of diverse disorders characterized by difficulties in social interaction and communication. Other features of these disorders include atypical patterns of activity and behavior, such as difficulty moving from one activity to another, preoccupation with details, and unusual reactions to sensations.

The abilities and needs of people with autism vary and can evolve over time. Some people with autism are able to lead independent lives, while others suffer from severe disabilities and require lifelong care and support. Autism often affects education and employment opportunities. In addition, the burden of providing care and support on families may increase. Community behaviors and levels of support provided by local and national agencies are important factors in determining the quality of life of people with autism.
